Cheap & Easy Chicken Philly Cheesesteak!

This is one of those recipes you just come across and you can’t figure out where you got it. This one is a keeper for my household! The kids enjoyed it and that’s a success in my book! They were also quite filling.

Let’s price it out, shall we?

Chicken – I buy my chicken breasts from Zaycon. They are an online company providing frozen chicken breasts that are delivered straight to you from the farms! You can check them out at Zaycon Foods. I buy a box of these and split them with a friend. I get about 20 pounds for $1.89 per pound! So for this meal, I used 2 pounds making it $3.78.

Green Bell Pepper – I found these on sale at Kroger a bit ago for $0.79 each. I know Aldi runs sales on these frequently.

Onion – I buy these in bulk at Costco. I get a 10 pound bag for $4.99 and usually get 9 or 10 onions. They last me all month! I used 1/2 an onion which is $0.27.

Dale’s Steak Seasoning – My husband uses this if I ever find good deals on steak so we usually have a bottle on hand. We didn’t this time so I had to go buy it. It was NOT on sale which made me sad but I knew it would get used up so I snatched a bottle for $3.69 (OUCH). There are 32 servings per bottle. This recipe calls for 1/4 cup or 4 Tbsp so the price would be $0.48.

Butter – I buy butter at Costco because it is the cheapest I have found. You will pay just under $8.00 for 4 pounds (or 128 Tbsp) of unsalted butter. I freeze them until I’m ready to use them. 2 Tbsp costs only $0.12!

Mozzarella Cheese – When looking for sales on blocks of cheese or shredded cheese I tend to find the best deal is in bulk. I can’t use 5 pounds of shredded cheese per month so I split it with a friend. For me then, my share of shredded cheese is $3.04 per pound. When pricing this recipe, your’e using an ounce per serving. There are 12 servings so 12 ounces will cost $2.28. I used mozzarella cheese but you could use sliced provolone and it would be just as delicious!

Hoagie Rolls/ Hot Dog Buns – When I first found this recipe, it called specifically for hoagie rolls. The only ones I could find looked delicious but would have burned a whole in my wallet they were so expensive! I chose instead to get some cheap hot dog buns and call it a day. I was at Aldi, minding my own business, when out of the blue I spot a shopping cart FULL of hot dog buns marked B1G1 (buy one get one) FREE and they were on sale for $0.85!!! I did a quick happy dance and gained my composure. If you don’t come across a steal like I did, never fear!! Aldi and Kroger normally have them for $1 for 8. So 24 hot dogs buns is $3.

Total cost for this recipe is $9.93. There are 12 servings in this meal making each serving ONLY $0.83!! My family of 4 (2 adults and 2 toddlers) ate 3 servings in meal #1 ($2.49) and then used 6 servings in a potsticker recipe I found ($4.98 + potsticker ingredients = not a Five Dollar Dinner!!) and then have one more meal for leftovers ($2.49). Even if you have a family of 6, you would still be under the $5 mark!! YIPPEE!!

Another easy and filling Five Dollar Dinner!
